SA #8: "What Are Years?" and "He 'Digesteth Harde Yron'"

1. In what ways would you say that "What Are Years?" is stylistically different from the other Moore poems that we have read?

2. In "He 'Digesteth Harde Yron,'" Moore writes,
   Six hundred ostrich-brains served
at one banquet, the ostrich-plume-tipped tent
and desert spear, jewel-
gorgeous ugly egg-shell
   goblets, eight pairs of ostriches
in harness, dramatize a meaning
always missed by the externalist.

(a) What is meant by the term "externalist"?

(b) What meaning do you think the externalist misses?

(c) What do these lines suggest about the practice of observation?
