use your imagination

Hi everyone =]

I was thinking about something that we had discussed earlier in class this week about paintings and imagination and if Williams would regard a child's piece of art as imagination or an attempt to replicate. I personally think that if a child is just left to draw whatever he or she wants, a lot of the time, they will draw something that they imagined or perhaps something they may have seen before but altered in such a way that it no longer looks like the original object; something that Williams states is also a use of the imagination. I can recall quite vividly a time when my 4 year old niece drew what looked like distorted balloons with tails, arms, legs, and pointed ears. She had drawn something that I had never seen before and when i asked her what they were, she gave me a made up name and told me that they were originally supposed to be balloons, but she changed their appearance; she changed their appearance and made them her own. They were a product of her own imagination. in this sense I think that Williams would have approved of her art. had i told her specifically what to draw however, let's say i told her to draw a house and she did, that type of art, art that one must tell another to draw, I doubt he would have considered a viable candidate for the use of the imagination because it has been done before. What gets me is the distinction between a portrayal of one's own imagination and a slight distortion of an object already in existence. For example, if one were told to draw a house and instead of drawing what one would think of as "normal" windows, they drew what looked like eyes. Would that still be considered a replication of something already there or a use of the imagination? Where is the line drawn to distinguish mere finger painting from imaginative artwork? Is there a line?

  1. I think you are asking two very different questions. I do believe that Williams thought imagination was very important but as far as the subject of whether something is beautiful or not lies in the eye of the beholder. Yes a child could paint using his imagination, but would you want to buy it versus a painting by Picasso that is very imaginative as well. This is not to say that a price tag is the only way to judge whether something is beautiful or not but I do think it plays a role.

  2. I don't know if I can agree with your claim that Williams would not approve of a house drawing. I think that it's possible that Williams would have liked a picture of a house, but the picture would need to have imaginative characteristics. If the picture of the house was just a simple picture of the house, then Williams would probably disike it, but if the artist reinterpreted what a house was, and drew that, Williams might like it.

  3. I think that Williams would approve of a drawing of a house if the person envisioned the house in their head. Take for example, someone drawing a picture of their dream house.If the person drew a house that contained many different aspects from different houses that they have seen to make the perfect house, Williams would approve. Williams would not approve of a picture of a beatuiful house that already exists, which brings me to my conclusion that Williams would approve of any drawing of something that does not exist or the person drawing does not know it exists.

  4. I beleieve that Williams would think that a child's art is using imagination rather than just copying. This is so because kids have that ability to do something using only their imagination and not conflict with societies norms. By drawing a house with eyes this is one's interpretation of a "real" house therefore they are using their imaginations and not simply copying what they see in front of them.

  5. Using your imagination does not have to mean simply recreating something that looks different than the usual representation. It also means incorporating new ideas into the way you perceive those pictures. For example, like Arcy said, if a child were to draw a picture of something that resembles a house, they would be using their imagination if they pictured it as a monster. To the child, it is a representation of something imaginative. However perception is subjective, so to others the picture would just be an odd looking house.
